Pilz / Ohr / Kosmische Musik

Releases by Popol Vuh on three short-lived, but influential labels run by Rolf Ulrich Kaiser.

PILZ

Pilz was a sublabel of Ohr & Pilz music Produktion. BASF offered to finance it. So it became a subsidiairy of BASF. The label had it’s own design. The numbering is in order of release from BASF. Years of activity: 1971-1972. Into total the label released 20 albums and 7 singles.

OHR

Ohr was started by Kaiser in around 1969-1970 in assistance by Peter Meisel. The first lp was released in April 1970. The final release was completed in December 1973 and released early 1974. During this time span, Ohr released 33 albums and twelve 7" singles. The label shut down in 1975 and archive were stored at Dierks Studio. And several albums from the catalogue were licensed by Dierks’ Venus Records.
‘Kosmische Musik’ is the only original Ohr-release containing music by Popol Vuh. This double album opens with an excerpt from ‘In den Garten Pharaos’. Other artists on this double-album are Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Temple.

Brain

BRAIN

Brain Records was run by Bruno Wendel and Günter Körber in partnership with Metronome. They released three original Popol Vuh albums.

The label compiled several compilation albums, but none of them featured music by Popol Vuh. However they are present on the retrospective 8cdbox ‘The Brain Box – Cerebral Sounds Of Brain Records 1972-1979’, released by Universal in 2017

‘Herz aus Glas’ received a parallel release in 1977 on the French Egg label (different cover). The subtitle ‘Singet, Denn Der Gesang Vertreibt Die Wölfe...’ was the original title meant for this album, before it was decided to release it as the soundtrack to the film ‘Herz aus Glas’ by Werner Herzog.

‘Die Nacht der Seele’ was parallel released in 1979 by the Italian PDU-label.

‘Brüder des Schattens’ was released twice in 1978 by Brain Records. The second edition had the album with the ‘Nosferatu’-cover but the same catalogue number and label . See insert below

In 1978 ‘Brüder des Schattens’ appeared also on cassette. The album was also released in Japan in three different editions.

All three German releases have the orange of multicolor label, that followed up the green label that was used before 1977. Besides ‘Nosferatu’ has also been rereleased with a black label, which became the standard for Brain Records in the early 80s.

Of the Japanese releases one has a yellow and two have a blue label.

Innovative Communication / Racket

INNOVATIVE COMMUNICATION / RACKET

The Innovative Communication label was started by Klaus Schulze in 1978, a label – no wonder - dedicated to electronic music.

The label did one rerelease (‘Affenstunde’) and one new release (‘Sie still, wisse ICH BIN ‘)

In 1984 the label was sold to Da-music, and the records from the IC-catalogue received a Racket Records catalogue number.
I only know of a Racket-release of 'Sei Still, Wisse ICH bin'.

Innovative Communication produced also several ‘videoclips’. They were produced in the IC Video Studio since 1979.
Also one featuring Popol Vuh: ‘Gemeinsan Tranken sie den Wein’.
For a short while this video was available on youtube (2013).
Alas it was a copy of very poor quality. In the first part of the video we see Daniel Fichelscher playing guitar, to be followed by Florian Fricke playing piano.
See stills below.

The movie ‘Sei Still, Wisse ICH bin‘ was released ten years later by Hermann Bauer Verlag (1991), and by Spalax in 1996

It seems this album was planned as a release on this label, but it appeared by Cicadao Records (001, 1985) and Base Records (KS 80 034, 1986)

Egg

EGG

A French sublabel of Barclay that originally started in 1969. After a restart in 1976 – still as a sublabel of Barclay - it was profiled as the ‘European Progressive Rock’-label.
The label released two albums by Popol Vuh:

‘Coeur de Verre’ (1997) was a parallel release to ‘Herz aus Glas’ on Brain with a different cover and title in French.
There are two versions with different labels.
In 1979 the album was released by Egg in Japan.

‘Nosferatu – Fantome de la Nuit’ was a premier release

Celestial Harmonies

CELESTIAL HARMONIES

In 1968 Eckart Rahn started his Kuckuck Schallplatten-label. This Munich-based  label released music by Deuter, Eberhard Schöner and Peter Michael Hamel. Not however of Popol Vuh. This changed when Rahn started the Celestial Harmonies-label in the early 80s.

Celestial Harmonies did no first release of Popol Vuh albums, only a  few reissues and compilations. Except for the three piano tracks ´Spirit of Peace I-III´.

They did only one straight re-edition of a Popol Vuh album, namely ‘Hosianna Mantra’ (1981),  remastered by Bob Cubbage and Allen Landau.

For ‘Tantric Songs’ they took the subtitle of the album ‘Die Nacht der Seele’ and selected seven tracks for the A-side this lp. For the B-side they took the title track of the album  ‘Brüder des Schattens – Söhne des Lichts’. Ulrich Kraus did the remastering.

In later years ‘Hosianna Mantra’ and ‘Tantric Songs’ were combined on a cd.

They did also a rerelease of  ‘In den Garten Pharaos’ combined with what first looks as a rerelease of ‘Aguirre’. However from the original ‘Aguirre’-album only the title track is included, plus the three previously unreleased ‘Spirit of Peace’-tracks.
Bob Cubbage did digital remix of the ‘Aguirre’-track. Ulrich Kraus did digital remix of ‘In the Gardens of Pharao’ and  ‘Vuh’, and digital recording of the three ‘Spirit of Peace’-tracks in 1981. Eckart Rahn is mentioned as producer of these tracks. Alas the recording studio is not mentioned.

In an account of the history of the Celestial Harmonies label, written by John Schaefer and based on talks he had with Rahn in 1997:

“The next big step was the beginning of the CD era. Eckart Rahn was one of the first to embrace digital technology, and points to his 1981 recording of Spirit of Peace (13008-2) by Popol Vuh's leader and pianist Florian Fricke as the turning point. It is hard to point to any one project as the first-ever digital recording, but this was certainly one of the first. "It was the first time I experienced the magic of digital recording," Rahn recalls. "I was in the studio with engineer Ulrich Kraus and we were listening to the performance in the studio. I said, could we listen to the tape itself? And he said, you are listening to the tape. I couldn't believe it. He switched back and forth between the live sound and the sound from the tape and your ears could not tell them apart." When the digital CD format was introduced in Europe in late 1983 and in the U.S. in 1984, Rahn was ready for it.” (From: www.harmonies.com)

The second piano piece appeared in 1985 on the official Popol Vuh release ‘Spirit of Peace’. The album ‘Spirit of Peace’ was not in the SPV reissue program, probably due to problems with Celestial  Harmonies.

As said, Celestial Harmonies only did the first release of the three piano pieces ‘Spirit of Peace I-III’. It is not clear whether this release was authorized by Florian Fricke.

The label used the work of Florian Fricke and Popol Vuh for four of their compilations: ´Earth’s Answer´, ´Keys of Life´, ´Musqique Mechanique´ and ´Produced Music - 1966/1996´.

Quote

Joseph D.Rowland (Pallbearer):

"Popol Vuh is one of my favorite bands of all time. I'm not really sure how I came across Popol Vuh years ago, but they have consistently stuck with me as one of the most atmosphere-filled music groups that's able to conjure up such an incredible feeling, a meditative feeling, with simple but with awesome melodies, hypnotic".
